Leg 20: Santa Cruz to Coyote Point Marina (Home Sweet Home!)

 Sunday September 27, 2015

Happy Birthday George!!!

Bluewater's Leg 20
Departure Day:  Sunday September 27, 2015
Departure Time:  Just after 5:00am
2 souls aboard:  Lawrence and Mark
Route: North from Santa Cruz
Distance:  approx 50nm to Half Moon Bay plus another 50nm to Coyote Point Marina (Home Sweet Home)

The boat has been in Santa Cruz exactly 2 weeks. Leg 17's crew of 3 (Mark, Paul, Lawrence) arrived in Santa Cruz on Sunday  Sept 13th. Lawrence spent last weekend hosting some daysails out of Santa Cruz which I silently dubbed Leg 18. Yesterday, Lawrence went out for another daysail which will be known as Leg 19.

The timing and weather window of this Leg was determined last night around 9pm. Mark got up around 2:45am and was out the door by 3am this morning. He picked up Lawrence sometime before 4am and they drove to Santa Cruz together. Mark sent a text at 5:18am which stated:  "Departed at 5am from Santa Cruz under clear skies and no wind. There is a bit of swell but we anticipate a relatively calm trip north. We will evaluate at half moon bay but will likely head to coyote point."

I will send more reports as I receive them. If they opt for the entire 100nm to Coyote Point Marina, I am anticipating a 20 hour journey (or hopefully slightly shorter) which means I hope to pick them up around midnight (or earlier).

I am hoping they are taking watches during the day to catch up on sleep so I'm avoiding calling them. I hope they reply with their watch schedule and call when able. Also, I sure hope they started their MotionX!

p.s. In the attachment below, Santa Cruz is labelled at the bottom, Mark's photo is Bluewater's current location, I am the blue dot (in Belmont) and Coyote Point Marina is just south of San Francisco Airport (a purple airplane symbol just north of Burlingame). At 9:16am, they are half way to Half Moon Bay.

The Noon Update

Lawrence emailed that they are just north of Half Moon Bay and intending to continue all the way to Coyote Point. I called the Harbormaster and he is expecting them late tonight and I'll fill out paperwork at my convenience. Mark called and gave me a summary of the watches:

Lawrence (1st watch):  4:45am to 8am
Both: 8-9am
Mark:  9-11:30am
Both:  11:30am - 12:30pm
I guess I'm a little mixed up because someone was going to get rest now and I can't remember which one, maybe Lawrence.

Mark said they had some fog and it was slightly nerve-wracking because they saw quite a few small fishing skiffs (like 2-3 people in a Boston Whaler) that didn't show up well on the radar. Nonetheless, they had over 1/2 mile of visibility and it kept them on their toes.

They also saw a decapitated seal (gnarly) and some big tall dorsal fins that looked like Killer Whales but they don't think they were Killer Whales.

Hopefully, they'll enjoy the eclipse of the Supermoon tonight!

p.s. Attached is another GPS location, this time just north of Half Moon Bay.
