Leg 13, San Diego Day Sailing!

Wednesday August 12, 2015

Having arrived the previous afternoon, we (Mark/Liz/Amanda) woke up and were thrilled to have made it to San Diego! In fact, we were shocked, excited, intrigued, amazed, and somewhat in disbelief. We had had a LOT of different crew members and crazy plans but somehow it all came together and there we were in San Diego enjoying our success. Hooray!! We had arrived at our planned destination on time to await the arrival of Marilyn and Michael, Bluewater's guests at our furthest destination south and turn-around point. What fun! THANKS to everyone who signed up!

Amanda rocked out while Liz lounged and
Mark went for a run

The Tuna that evaded us!!!
We didn't catch any tuna but
someone did!!! We hear they were
catching tuna further off the coast
and down deep in the water

Marilyn, Amanda, Liz and Michael - Best Western Palms Hotel & Marina

And on arrival in San Diego, I mixed up the names of the marinas and we reserved a slip in Shelter Island Marina (not Shelter Cove Marina) so we unwittingly ended up in the high rent district but no complaints. Our marina had access to 2 hotel pools!! So we lounged around at the pool until Marilyn and Michael arrived.

Having lived in San Diego previously, Marilyn and Michael had a full agenda of people to see and places to go. That first night, Michael visited some friends and Marilyn stayed with us on Bluewater.

Thursday August 13, 2015

We enjoyed hanging out on Bluewater with no agenda.

Good Morning!

Time for sailing and we're ready!! Mark, Amanda, Marilyn, Liz
After leisurely lounging and prepping, we were FINALLY ready to take Marilyn out sailing! The weather was perfect and it was fun and relaxing.

(and even out into the ocean)

And since San Diego is a host to many branches of military, we saw lots of activity including these Military Dinghy's! And here is a link to Knitting Underway!

Knitting lessons are underway.

Bluewater's track for San Diego Daysail #1
We sailed in the Bay and tacked back and forth past the Midway, then we turned around and
ducked our nose out into the Pacific before heading back to our dock at Shelter Island Marina

Route: San Diego Bay Daysail #1
Crew:  Mark/Liz/Amanda/Marilyn
Departure Time:  2:06 pm Thursday August 13, 2015
Distance:  approx 22 nm
Arrival Time:  almost 7 pm
Time enroute:  approx 4-3/4 hours

Summary:  We had a super great sail around the Bay and out past Point Loma, briefly out into the wide open ocean.  Amanda taught Aunt Marilyn to knit, the breeze was light (10-12 knots and less), the Bay was crazy busy (lots of traffic of all types: sailboats, power boats, Navy ships, Container ships, kayakers, you name it), but the ocean was beautiful and pleasant.

In fact, Mark was spotted just yesterday (Oct 23rd, 2015) STILL wearing his parachute cord bracelet, 2 months later.

Back at the marina with BIG smiles - So many crafts, so little time...

Mark off dinghying around. He wandered down a few docks to visit another

Saturday August 15, 2015

After days (maybe months) of discussing the San Diego Zoo option, we woke up and planned a zoo day! Meanwhile, Roland was running a Half Marathon in Jackson, MI "Running Between The Vines" and he came in first in his age category. WOOHOO!!! Congratulations! We loved getting the news.

Roland and Kay in Jackson, MI
(No they weren't in San Diego or sailing;
I'm just seeing who's paying attention)

Roland came in FIRST in his category (Men age 50-59) in a Half Marathon - WOW! That deserves space in my blog!
He also came in 20th out of 237 Men and 28th overall out of 855 runners.
His pace over 13.1 miles was 7:33 min/mile!!!!!!

And here is Amanda gone wild with a selfie stick:
