We spent another day in port, Newport Beach.

We got in the dinghy and motored to a public dock on Balboa Island. Here is a view of Bluewater from the dinghy.

Here we are meeting a fabulous friend, Teri Rogers, who lives on Balboa Island
Teri is a dear friend of our friend Kevin Mulholland. She has oceans of sailing experience and great stories.

We all dinghy'd back to Bluewater. Here is Mark introducing Teri Rogers to Bluewater

Here we are heading to a marine parts store that opened at 8:30am
The good news is, we called ahead and they have the part!
Luckily, our dinghy proved reliable for the 4-1/2 mile round trip!

Departure time - finally!

Newport Beach enroute to Oceanside Harbor

We finally departed in Bluewater at 11:30am in calm overcast conditions (with light winds predicted) after our delay due to a broken throttle end piece. Below is the report I sent after we were underway.

Though we had very little wind and motor-sailed the entire way, soon after departure we found ourselves in a fish boil area with birds, dolphins, flying fish, and what we think were small juvenile whales (with dolphin like fins). It was fun seeing the marine life:  Whales & Dolphins!

We arrived in Oceanside just after 5pm. The Oceanside Harbor Patrol gave us a double wide slip and we were happy to be there. The weather was gorgeous.  Oddly, they put us in the impound area.

Tuesday August 11, 2015

Early Tuesday morning, Bluewater crew Leg 12 was in the Final Push to San Diego. 3 souls aboard:  Mark, Liz, Amanda.  We were off at 8:43am from Oceanside with winds calm (less than 2 knots), thick overcast, long period small south swell.  Surfers were out and the military was doing dinghy maneuvers. We had been hearing explosions from Camp Pendleton (marine base close to Oceanside) for days. They were doing live-fire exercises and reporting over channel 16. Here is a 4 second video of the Military in hot pursuit!

Surfers were out as we departed

Soon we were distracted by dolphins!!! Huge pods of hundreds of them! They were so cute. Lots of babies and pregnant females. So many dolphins! So beautiful. Also, a giant sea lion just hanging out with his nose in the air. We missed a bonito on the fishing boat lines, darn! Amazing sea life but not a breath of wind. We were motoring.

Amanda and Mark enjoying our dolphin escorts, including babies!

Breathtaking

So many dolphins!

Friendly

So much fun to see

What a show!!!

Food from David/Mary/Sam - THANKS!

We did not waste food!
Why would we?
Look how good it looks!

More fishing!

Another Mackerel!

And after a fantastic dolphin show and some fishing, we were graced by the presence of a huge humpback whale. And guess what? Then we encountered more dolphins and Amanda remarked, "Mama, I'm hearing them!"
